The Bestia Challenge, what is it?
Pro trainer and Fitness 12 director, Steve Halsall has developed the seven-event challenge to be a true reflection of all round fitness, appealing to all body types and all levels.
Having in the past completed both the Ultrafit challenge and the Linford Christie challenge, Steve explains how he is keen to keep some classic gym exercises in the event.
“Parallel bar dips are synomanous with La Manga Club as it held the BBC Superstar’s event in recent times. And for those of you slightly older fitness enthusiasts, you’ll remember Brian Jacks smashing all comers in this event.”
The Events
The events are split over the Saturday afternoon one after the other. There is rest in-between to allow us to get you to the right place at the right time. Final order will be decided nearer the day
1. Wide grip chin-ups till you drop
Wide over-hand chin-ups, dropping full extension to the bottom of the movement, ensuring the chin reaches over the bar at the top. As many as you can do until you drop off the bar.
2. 1000 m row
Heats of four competitors with the fastest past the post taking the top points in the frantic last sprint on the Concept 2 rower.
3. Dips to failure
Strict technique as ever, full extension and dropping to just below 90° at the elbow.
4. Shoulder press with 25kgs in two minute’s
The 25kg bar must drop below the ears at the bottom of the movement and full extension of the arm at the top. Yes, we know it’s after the dips, that’s the IDEA!
5. 50m swim
Standing start in the pool, in heats of six, all times logged and points given from the quickest to the slowest.
6. Last man standing bleep test
Heats of six, with all competitors scoring points. The person who lasts the longest will pick up the most points.
7. La Cala hill sprint
Again, we have thrown this in so you are pre-exhausted from the Bleep Test.
This event will take place in waves of six. The sprint made famous by the BBC Superstars, who cycled up it but there is no such luxury for you. Everyone will be timed and given a place in the final table.
How do you win it?
Points will be given to all participants based on their placing. Everyone scores points and you will know your rank overall after each event. Points will be decided by the number of participants, so if 40 people take part, the winner of each event will receive 40 points, should 10 people tie for a position then the next position will reflect this.
For example:
Wide Grip Chins:
1st Jim Smith 43 = 40 pts
2nd Sam Jones 36 = 39
Phil Taylor 36 = 39
4th James Cox 34 = 37
Tony Bunter 34 = 37
6th Anthony Walker 33 = 35
In the event of a tie for first place, the winner will be the guy who has had the most first places or highest ranking in individual events throughout the weekend.
